Jetske Korenromp gave remnants of the flower auction and wilted bouquets in the store a second life as ecological packaging material. By cooking, grinding and pressing them, a bit like handmade paper. That saves a lot of plastic, paper and tape.

Bottom ash remains after incinerating household waste. For processing company Mineralz (Renewi), Carissa Ten Tije made an overview of current and possible new applications of that bottom ash. For example a terrazzo-like stone material and wood stain.

Surfboards usually consist of a core of lightweight plastic with a top layer of fiberglass and synthetic resin. For the latter, Bart Vernooij developed a more sustainable alternative of natural flax fibers and an epoxy resin that is partly biobased.

Surfplanken bestaan doorgaans uit een kern van lichtgewicht kunststof met een toplaag van glasvezel en kunsthars. Voor dat laatste ontwikkelde Bart Vernooij een duurzamer alternatief van natuurlijke vlasvezels en een epoxyhars die gedeeltelijk op biobasis is.

On January 1, 2018, China stopped importing plastic waste. In Wen’an, recycling capital of all that plastic, Minyang Liu visualized the consequences. And she discovered that the processing of plastic is complex because of the many interests, and not by definition environmentally friendly.

Op 1 januari 2018 stopte China met de import van plastic afval. In Wen’an, recycle-hoofdstad van al dat plastic, bracht Minyang Liu de gevolgen in beeld. En ze ontdekte dat de verwerking van plastic complex is door de vele belangen, en niet per definitie milieuvriendelijk.

Plant based components find their way to all kinds of applications. Under the abbreviation BLOOM, five regional hubs have been established in Europe – one in Wageningen. To boost knowledge and awareness about the possibilities of the bio-economy among a wider audience.

TU Delft is participating in the European Ecobulk project. Researchers and engineers from different disciplines work together to develop circular models and techniques. They mainly focus on composites in the automotive industry, construction and the furniture sector.

De TU Delft doet mee in het Europese project Ecobulk. Onderzoekers en ingenieurs uit verschillende disciplines werken samen om circulaire modellen en technieken te ontwikkelen. Ze richten zich met name op composieten in de auto-industrie, de bouw en de meubelsector.

Composite materials make lightweight constructions and a long service life possible, but recycling often leads to a loss of quality. TU Delft did studies to see how you can still reuse the blades of a wind turbine while retaining value.

Composieten ofwel samengestelde materialen maken lichtgewicht constructies en een lange levensduur mogelijk, maar recyclen leidt vaak tot kwaliteitsverlies. De TU Delft deed onderzoek om te zien hoe je de bladen van een windturbine toch met behoud van waarde kunt hergebruiken.

Stijn Speksnijder, a graduate student at TU Delft, designed a bridge for cyclists and pedestrians using discarded blades from a wind turbine. The previous life is clearly visible in the design. Two rotor blades cross the entire span and support the bridge structure.

Stijn Speksnijder, afstudeerder aan de TU Delft, ontwierp een brug voor fietsers en voetgangers met gebruik van afgedankte bladen van een windturbine. Het vorige leven is duidelijk zichtbaar. Twee rotorbladen kruisen de volledige overspanning en dragen de brugopbouw.

Blades from a windmill are made of fiberglass on a wooden core. By cutting panels directly from a turbine blade, the structural value of the material is retained. Without the paint, the fiberglass and the wood are clearly visible.

Bladen van een windmolen zijn gemaakt van glasvezel op een houten kern. Door panelen direct uit een turbineblad te snijden, blijft de structurele waarde van het materiaal behouden. Zonder de verf zijn de glasvezel en het hout duidelijk zichtbaar.

It is possible to shred composite material from a windmill blade and reuse it in a thermoplastic material. Graduate student Tjits Tuinhof designed the housing of a car charger. Consciously, as a symbolic and direct link with the wind energy industry.

Het is mogelijk om composietmateriaal van een windmolenblad te versnipperen en te hergebruiken in een thermoplastisch materiaal. Afstudeerder Tjits Tuinhof ontwierp daarmee de behuizing van een autolader. Bewust, als symbolische en directe link met de windenergie-industrie.

Carpet and floor coverings can hardly be recycled due to the different layers, materials, glues and treatments. DSM-Niaga developed a backing without harmful ingredients and a way to connect and separate the top layer and backing for recycling.

Tapijt en vloerbedekking zijn bijna niet te recyclen vanwege de verschillende lagen, materialen, verlijmingen en bewerkingen. DSM-Niaga ontwikkelde een rug zonder schadelijke ingrediënten en een manier om toplaag en rug te verbinden en weer te scheiden voor recycling.

A baby crib made of simple, non-toxic and fully recyclable materials. DSM-Niaga and Ecor have jointly developed laminated and formaldehyde-free panels as an alternative to MDF and other sheet materials. The polyester mattress has been developed by DSM.

DSM-Niaga and Royal Auping joined forces to speed up their circular ambitions by redesigning a mattress for circularity. Knowing that most mattresses end up in landfill or incineration, DSM-Niaga used its material science and design expertise to complement the Auping promise of the highest quality and comfort for sleeping. This mattress is made from just two base materials: polyester and steel. Polyester textiles are soft, resilient, durable, highly recyclable and flame retardant. The steel and polyester can be separated and re-used, enabling mattress refurbishment to extend life, and eventually mattress-to-mattress recycling. The mattress has top climate performance for a comfortable sleep, releases virtually no VOCs (volatile organic compounds), and is flame resistant.

DSM-Niaga en Auping bundelden hun krachten om hun gedeelde circulaire ambities te verwezenlijken. Samen her-ontwierpen ze een matras op basis van circulariteit. Vandaag de dag eindigen de meeste matrassen nog op de afvalberg of in de verbrandingsinstallatie. Dat kan anders en daarom zette DSM-Niaga haar materiaalwetenschap en ontwerpexpertise in om Auping’s belofte van het hoogste slaapcomfort te complementeren. Ons matras is gemaakt van slechts twee basismaterialen: polyester en staal. Polyestertextiel is zacht, veerkrachtig, duurzaam, zeer recyclebaar en brandvertragend. Het staal en polyester kunnen van elkaar gescheiden en dus hergebruikt worden. Zo kunnen onderdelen na verloop van tijd makkelijk vernieuwd worden om daarmee de levensduur van de matras te verlengen en – uiteindelijk – matras-naar-matras recycling mogelijk te maken. Het matras ventileert optimaal waardoor je lekker slaapt, is gemaakt van materialen zonder chemische toevoegingen, en is brandvertragend.

This is a demonstration version of a so-called extruder. Polyester carpets are grated into small pieces (‘fluff’), fed into the device, and converted into liquid under pressure. This liquid plastic is then used to make new fibres for the production of new carpets.

According to Bengin Dawod, the reconstruction of Syria is about restoring the elusive soul of places and cities. This is only possible with and for the local community, with on location available materials, techniques and skills. Flexible, and not according to a rigid plan.

De wederopbouw van Syrië gaat volgens Bengin Dawod over het herstellen van de ongrijpbare ziel van plekken en steden. Dat kan alleen met en voor de lokale community, met daar beschikbare materialen, technieken en vaardigheden. Flexibel, en niet volgens een rigide plan.

Mobile phones – and other electronic devices – can in principle be used for much longer. At least, when users feel comfortable handing them in. How can a digital platform help a company like KPN to stimulate customer circular behaviour?

Designers are constantly looking for new, sustainable materials. Clara Jouaux and Mia Patecka developed a new collection based on non-toxic, biobased and biodegradable materials such as seaweed, wool bioplastics and healthy minerals.

The Asphyxia installation (= suffocation) shows the level of air pollution in the immediate vicinity. The system receives input from devices that residents in the neighbourhood have built themselves and that measure air pollution. A project of the Waag Society and students of Digital Design.

The Province of Noord-Brabant challenges inhabitants, governments, and businesses to (re)use (raw) materials more often and in a smarter way. This makes the economy of Brabant more sustainable and more competitive. The final goal is utilizing materials without any loss of value, so that there will no longer be any waste. The province stimulates businesses, such as Vanderlande, that are developing new products and processes contributing to this goal.

De provincie daagt inwoners, overheden en bedrijven uit om grondstoffen en materialen vaker en slimmer te (her)gebruiken. Zo wordt de Brabantse economie duurzamer en meer concurrerend. Het uiteindelijke doel is om grondstoffen zo te benutten dat geen waarde meer verloren gaat, er bestaat dus geen afval meer. De provincie stimuleert bedrijven, zoals Vanderlande, die nieuwe producten en processen ontwikkelen waardoor zij bijdragen aan dit doel.
